Head of Communications for UK and Europe , Standard Chartered
Claire Newell is the Head of Communications for UK and Europe, based in London. As part of the Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing department, she leads a team across London and Poland who cover the Bank's eight European markets and are responsible for promoting and protecting the reputation of Standard Chartered. Claire and her team provide both internal and external communications expertise and support to the Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking and Private Bank businesses and functions in the Europe Region. Claire has over 18 years of communications and Public Relations experience in the financial services industry, having worked for global investment and UK retail banks.¬† She started Standard Chartered in 2020 as Senior Communications Manager, Europe, and was promoted in 2023 to her current role.¬† Prior to joining the Bank, Claire worked for the UK high street retail bank TSB in the Press Office responsible for corporate communications. Before that, she was a Press Officer at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, responsible for media relations for the Wealth Management and Global Research businesses. Claire also worked for BG Group, a UK energy company, as a Government Affairs Analyst covering UK and European policy. She graduated from the University of Bath with a BA Hons degree in French, Russian and European Politics. Claire was part of the team shortlisted for Best Use of Media Relations in a Campaign (In-House) in the Corporate, City & Public Affairs Awards 2021. Plus, she was a team member voted by Business and City journalists in Press Choice's Reputational Research as the Best Press Office in the industry in 2018 and 2016. Claire is a keen runner, having completed the 2021 and 2007 London Marathon, fundraising for charity.
